Cross-Border Comeback Fuelled by Tourism Boom
In a powerful symbol of post-pandemic recovery and regional cooperation, China and Vietnam have officially reopened their international passenger railway line connecting Nanning and Hanoi. After a five-year suspension, the route is once again transporting travellers across the 1,297-kilometre land border, tapping into a growing tourism boom and making it easier than ever to journey between these two culturally rich nations.
The service, which first launched in 2009 and was paused in early 2020 due to pandemic-related border closures, resumed on a recent Sunday, marking a new chapter for both countries' travel industries.
An 11.5-Hour Ride With Panoramic Potential
The newly restored line—designated as T8701—offers an 11.5-hour overnight journey via comfortable sleeper cars between Nanning, in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Hanoi, Vietnam’s vibrant capital. The route links not only two cities but also two cultures, economies, and rapidly growing tourism sectors. For many travellers, the train journey is more than transportation—it's an experience, offering scenic views of changing landscapes and a slower, immersive alternative to flying.
Visa-Free Travel Opens New Doors
One of the biggest incentives for regional and international travellers is China's expanded visa-free entry policy. Vietnamese citizens can now travel into China without a visa if they are part of an approved tour group, while citizens from 38 other countries—including Australia, Singapore, France and Germany—enjoy 30-day visa-free access for tourism. This makes the Hanoi-Nanning rail link especially attractive to Western backpackers and adventure-seekers already visiting Vietnam. The direct rail connection provides a practical and scenic route into mainland China, bypassing the need for a visa and connecting seamlessly to China’s world-class high-speed rail network.
Gateway to Greater Journeys
Once in Nanning, travellers can continue to other major destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin, and beyond, with China’s efficient rail infrastructure offering connections to cultural sites, national parks, and bustling urban centres. According to China Highlights, Vietnamese travellers are increasingly using Nanning as a springboard to explore more of China. This is not only a benefit for Vietnamese tourists but also a new opportunity for inbound travellers looking to experience both countries in one trip.
Riding the Wave of Tourism Growth
The timing of the reopening aligns with a surge in bilateral tourism. Vietnam received over 3.7 million Chinese visitors in 2023, a dramatic 114 per cent increase over the previous year. In just the first quarter of 2024, nearly 1.6 million Chinese travellers visited Vietnam, making China the second-largest source of inbound tourists after South Korea.Conversely, Vietnamese visitors now account for a growing share of foreign arrivals into China, with tourism officials noting steady month-on-month growth since borders reopened.
Trains, Trade and Regional Ties
Beyond tourism, the railway also supports the vibrant trade relationship between China and Vietnam. Rail remains a crucial artery for transporting goods between the two nations—especially electronics, garments, and agricultural products—making the passenger route part of a broader infrastructure push to strengthen cross-border cooperation.A New Route for the Curious Traveller
With its blend of comfort, culture, and convenience, the Hanoi-Nanning train is more than a revival of old tracks—it’s a gateway to new adventures. Whether you're exploring ancient pagodas in Hanoi, hopping aboard a bullet train to Beijing, or experiencing the modern pulse of Nanning, this route makes the journey every bit as memorable as the destination.
