Viet Nam’s North-South railway line, running through the country’s central provinces, offers incredible potential to transform the tourism landscape. With destinations such as Quang Binh, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, and Khanh Hoa, the scenic railway routes present an exciting opportunity for tourists to explore the heart of the country in a unique and immersive way. The charm of train travel in Viet Nam, combined with its breathtaking landscapes, makes rail tourism an untapped goldmine.
Positive Momentum for Rail Tourism
In recent years, the push to develop tourist-friendly railway routes in Viet Nam’s central region has been met with promising results. Trains in the country are no longer just a means of transportation—they have become an integral part of the tourism experience, offering travelers the chance to journey through stunning scenery while connecting with the culture and history of each locality. One of the most significant milestones in rail tourism development was the Memorandum of Understanding signed in July 2024 between the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism and Viet Nam Railways Corporation. This partnership opened new doors for collaboration between the tourism and railway sectors, aimed at promoting sustainable travel and boosting regional tourism.
In March 2024, the “Central Heritage Connection” train route was launched, connecting Da Nang and Hue City. The train journey offers passengers an unforgettable ride through the iconic Hai Van Pass, widely regarded as one of the most scenic railway routes in the world. This project has not only enhanced tourism in the region but has also contributed to easing road traffic congestion, providing a safer and more comfortable travel option for both locals and international tourists.
Expanding Rail Tourism in Quang Nam and Beyond
Quang Nam, a province with a rich cultural heritage, has also embraced rail tourism as part of its broader tourism development strategy. In January 2025, the luxury tourist train SJourney brought travelers to Tra Kieu Station in Duy Xuyen District, where they explored renowned green tourism destinations, including Hoi An Ancient Town, Cam Thanh Coconut Village, and Thanh Ha Pottery Village. This type of sustainable, eco-friendly tourism perfectly complements the local attractions, creating a memorable experience for visitors. The partnership between Quang Nam Province and the Quang Nam Railway Corporation is further cemented by the 2024-2030 tourism development plan, which focuses on enhancing rail-based tourism, diversifying travel options, and increasing the number of visitors arriving via train. The goal is to expand the “Central Heritage Connection” route, connecting Da Nang, Hue, and Quang Nam while fostering collaboration between railway operators and local tourism businesses.
Meanwhile, the operation of luxury tourist trains on the Da Nang - Quy Nhon and Nha Trang - Quy Nhon routes has been a success, with over 600 tourists traveling daily to Dieu Tri and Quy Nhon stations in Binh Dinh Province. These trains, equipped with 5-star international amenities, offer a premium travel experience and are helping to boost the region’s appeal to high-end tourists.

The lack of connectivity between railway stations and tourist attractions is another hurdle. The absence of an effective transit system makes it difficult for passengers to easily access popular destinations once they arrive at the station.
To overcome these limitations, experts suggest that Viet Nam look to countries with well-established rail tourism industries, such as Switzerland, Japan, and Thailand, which offer efficient and luxurious train travel experiences. Incorporating these best practices can help Viet Nam tap into the growing demand for rail-based tourism.
The Future of Rail Tourism in Viet Nam
Looking ahead, the potential for rail tourism in Viet Nam is enormous. The country’s railway network, stretching from the north to the south, provides a unique opportunity to develop tourism experiences that showcase the nation’s diverse landscapes, from lush plains to rugged mountains and pristine coastal areas.Quang Nam and Da Nang are poised to become key players in this emerging market, with plans for new railway stations and urban rail lines that will connect Chu Lai International Airport and Hoi An City. These developments are expected to create seamless travel options for visitors, further enhancing the appeal of rail tourism.
The government and local authorities are also keen to invest in green and sustainable tourism products, such as cultural and culinary experiences, that can be integrated into the railway ecosystem. This will not only improve the overall tourist experience but also promote Viet Nam’s unique cultural heritage.
As Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism, rightly pointed out, the country’s railway network offers “safe and efficient” travel that is ideal for tourism. With the right investments and collaboration between sectors, rail tourism in Viet Nam can truly flourish, providing travelers with one of the most memorable ways to explore the country.
