Greener Horizons: Luang Prabang’s Path to Sustainable Tourism

Luang Prabang
A Heritage City with a Modern Mission

Luang Prabang, already renowned for its timeless beauty and UNESCO World Heritage status, is charting a bold new course—one that blends its cultural legacy with a commitment to sustainability. As Laos’ cultural capital sets its sights on becoming a certified Green Destination, a new chapter is unfolding in its tourism story.

Pushing for Global Recognition

Luang Prabang is currently working toward the prestigious Tourism Destination Award from the Green Destinations Organization. This global initiative recognizes places that demonstrate excellence in sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship, community involvement, and responsible visitor management. The city’s growing efforts signal a strong commitment to preserving its natural and cultural assets while adapting to the modern demands of travel.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

On 15 May, local authorities held a consultation meeting to align stakeholders on the steps required to meet Green Destinations certification criteria. Discussions focused on completing key documentation and showcasing the city’s approach to managing tourism in ways that protect the environment, support local livelihoods, and maintain the city’s authentic charm.

Provincial leaders are encouraging contributions from all sectors—government, business, and community—to strengthen the application with relevant data and ideas. This collective push reflects a shared vision of making Luang Prabang a role model for sustainable travel in Southeast Asia.

Award-Winning Efforts Already Recognized

Luang Prabang’s commitment is already receiving international attention. In March 2025, the city secured third place in the “Destination Management” category of the Green Destinations Top 100 Story Awards. The recognition was presented at the Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) in Berlin, one of the world’s leading travel trade shows. This award not only highlights the city’s proactive initiatives but also boosts its visibility on the global tourism stage.

Looking Ahead to 2029 and Beyond

According to Soudaphone Khomthavong, Head of the Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Luang Prabang aims to become a high-quality, modern destination that is both regionally and globally connected by 2029. The city expects to welcome approximately 2.3 million visitors in 2025, and ensuring that tourism benefits both people and the planet remains central to its development strategy.

Balancing Growth with Responsibility

As tourism rebounds in the region, Luang Prabang’s vision stands out. It is not just about attracting more visitors—it’s about attracting the right kind of tourism. By preserving traditions, protecting the environment, and empowering local communities, the city is laying the groundwork for a greener, more resilient tourism model.
