This summer, Hawai‘i’s Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum invites visitors on a voyage millions of years in the making. From May 24, 2025, to January 25, 2026, the museum’s newest exhibition, Expedition Dinosaur: Into the Deep, brings prehistoric marine life to life through immersive displays and interactive activities designed to fascinate and educate visitors of all ages.
Set within a sprawling 7,000-square-foot gallery in the Castle Memorial Building, this exhibit draws stunning connections between ancient marine ecosystems and the vibrant ocean habitats that surround the Hawaiian Islands today.
Interactive Discovery for All Ages
The experience begins with hands-on learning designed to inspire curiosity and wonder. Budding paleontologists can unearth the past at fossil dig stations, while future animators will enjoy crafting their own dino-inspired scenes at the animation studio. One of the most popular highlights is the augmented reality sandbox, which helps visitors understand how volcanic islands—like Hawai‘i itself—form and evolve over time.
The “Journey to the Deep Theater” offers a multisensory dive into an underwater world few have imagined, bringing viewers face-to-face with creatures from the deep past and present alike. The blend of science, technology, and storytelling makes the exhibit as educational as it is entertaining.
Connecting Past to Present
At its core, Expedition Dinosaur: Into the Deep invites guests to see our oceans with fresh eyes. By comparing long-extinct marine reptiles with today’s coral reefs and deep-sea creatures, the exhibit encourages a greater appreciation for the fragile ecosystems that thrive around Hawai‘i. It’s a timely and important reminder of how the past can guide the protection of our planet’s future.
