Traditional Tanabata Festive Fare Shines at Yamazato

The Tanabata Festival, based on the celestial love story of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi, traditionally takes place across Japan in July and early August. Also known as the Star Festival because of this heavenly link, activities during Tanabata include decorating homes, shopping malls and streets with colourful streamers and boys and girls writing their wishes on strips of paper which are then hung from trees and bamboo.

Tanabata is a time for family gatherings and food plays an important part during the festival. Which is Michelin Plate restaurant Yamazato is marking the occasion with traditional Tanabata Gozen lunch platters and a multi-course Kaiseki dinner. A number of the dishes feature decorations and ingredients with the Tanabata theme, such as seasonal sweet corn and hair tail fish. In addition to delicious soups and noodles, also on offer are wonderfully fresh sashimi, tempura and grilled offerings.

Diners can enjoy a Gozen starter of smoked duck, mussels, shrimp and star-shaped paprika with yogurt egg yolk sauce. Highlights of the Kaiseki dinner include vermicelli with seasonal sweet fish (ayu), a hearty soup of pike eel dumplings and a grilled dish of Spanish mackerel with spicy miso leek sauce.

The Tanabata Festival at Yamazato runs from 1 - 28 July 2019, lunch 11:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., dinner: 6 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Priced at Baht 1,400++ for Gozen lunch and Baht 4,700++ for Kaiseki dinner.
