Aoshima (Cat Island)

Cats, cats, cats everywhere!

If you're a cat lover, Aoshima in Ehime Prefecture must seem like paradise. Aoshima is a former fishing village, but now with more than 100 cats roaming free and outnumbering residents, it's the most iconic of Japan's "cat islands."

Ferries run twice a day from Nagahama Port.
Though they may be cancelled in bad weather and can get full to capacity at peak times, it's still well worth adding the island to your itinerary!

There are many Cat Islands in Japan but none stands out more like Aoshima, with only a handful of human inhabitants and more than 100 felines!

It is located at Ehime Prefecture and the Island is only 1.6km long! You can finish exploring it within an hour!

You will be surrounded by Cats the moment you step off from the ferry. Ferry runs only twice a day and it takes 35 minutes to reach the Island from Nagahama Port. To get to Nagahama port, you have to alight at JR Iyonagahama station. Round Trip Ferry tickets cost 1360 JPY for Adults and 680 JPY.

However, there isn't any shops or vending machines around the Island. It is recommended you stay at the hotels near Nagahama Port, and make sure you don't miss your return ferry!

Cat lovers, remember to bring some food for yourself as well as for the cats! Watch a video
