When did Japan start its own railway?
The first railway in Japan was constructed in 1872 between Shinbashi Station in Tokyo and Yokohama Station in Kanagawa Prefecture. Japan's rail infrastructure expanded from just a few lines in the early stages to a network that has covered most of the country by the end of the Edo period. Today, Japanese rail technology continues to be the envy of the world, in particular, the shinkansen’s (bullet train) outstanding balance of speed and stability.

The fastest train vs leisure train
Of course, the fastest train is the world-famous shinkansen. There is a shinkansen that travels roughly 500km between Tokyo and Shin‐Osaka in just two and a half hours at speeds of up to 300km per hour.
