Malaysia strikes gold at Lunar New Year celebrations in Australia

Tourism Malaysia Sydney Office director Roslan Abdullah was brimming with excitement at Malaysia’s success as the feature participant at the four-day Lunar New Year celebrations held at the Crown entertainment precinct in Melbourne.

Roslan said he felt he had struck gold when Tourism Malaysia was invited to be Crown’s main partner in its iconic hawker bazaar at Southbank here to mark the Luna celebrations, and also to highlight Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2014.

“This event attracted more than 350,000 visitors and we had a wonderful opportunity to showcase our cuisine, culture, diversity and almost everything that makes Malaysia a unique country to visit,” Roslan said.

The whole festival setting was magnificent. It was held in the picturesque riverside walkway along the Yarra River.

At night the precinct looked like a fairyland and fireworks lit up the sky.

The 11 Malaysian food stalls and several other stallholders who sold Musang King Durian and Malaysian spices told Bernama they had been run off their feet, cooking for throngs of hungry people who queued with keen anticipation.

Tourism Malaysia had a big VMY 2014 stage for its cultural performances – Chinese, Malay and Indian — which were enthusiastically received.

“The performers did us proud,” Roslan said.

Special VMY 2014 special holiday packages promoted by a tour operator at the festival drew many keen inquiries about visiting Malaysia.

“To our surprise there were many, many people from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and even Vietnam who had come to Melbourne for the Chinese New Year and they showed interest in visiting Malaysia, he said.

The durian eating competitions held over the four days attracted many non- Malaysians and they told Ministry of Agriculture Sydney director Syariman Mat Salleh the fruit was delicious.
