INTERNATIONAL VISITATION THE UNITED STATES WAS UP SEVEN PERCENT IN JUNE 2013 – CHINA WAS UP 28%

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on February 12th that 5.5 million international visitors traveled to the United States in June 2013, a seven percent increase over June 2012.

In June 2013, the top inbound markets continued to be Canada and Mexico. Non-resident visits from Canada were up six percent and visits from Mexico increased six percent. The United Kingdom (-0.2%), Japan (0.4%) and Germany (0.9%) rounded out the top five. Six of the nine inbound overseas regional markets posted increases in non-resident visits in June 2013. Five of the nine inbound regions posted double-digit increases. A table showing the top 20 arrival markets was also posted upon the National Travel & Tourism Office (NTTO) website along with a few other tables.

For the first six months of 2013, international visits (31.8 million) were up 5.2 percent compared to the same period in 2012.

Top 10 Countries
In June 2013, eight of the top 10 countries posted increases in non-resident visits.
During the first six months of 2013, eight of the top 10 countries (sort based on June 2013) posted increases in non-resident visits to the United States.
Among the top 20 countries generating visitors to the United States for the first six months, the fastest growth rates were seen from: Taiwan, Colombia, Venezuela, China and Brazil.
For China, the good news was that arrivals in June were up almost 28%, and year-to-date they were up 25%.

In addition, the top 15 ports of entry are shown with the number of non-resident visitors that cleared Customs at each port and the rate of change over the first 6 months is also provided along with a table on the rates of change for the top 20 overseas markets for purpose of trip to the country. The NTTO staff members are working with the contractor to post the remaining monthly arrivals totals for 2013. In early March we hope to issue January-September data and just before or during the IPW in Chicago, we plan to release annual 2013 arrivals, preliminary 2013 travel exports for the top 20 countries and a new forecast.
