Although known more often as a ski resort, it is a year-round destination since the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786.
As one of the first ever mountain resorts, Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924.
The winter season sees World Cup ski races, music festivals and the full range of winter activities.
From December to May, the Chamonix Valley is guaranteed of snow-sure conditions as 90% of the skiing is above 2,000m.
Cable cars take visitors up to several nearby peaks with panoramic views, including Aiguille du Midi, at 3,842m, with its 360° panorama, and there is the chance to ride on the cog railway to the Mer de Glace (sea of ice), France’s largest glacier.
In the summer months Chamonix offers hiking and scenic opportunities with the cable cars in operation.
The Chamonix Valley takes in three natural reserves and the most densely glaciated area in the Alps, with Chamois, ibex, deer, white hares, black grouse and ptarmigan among some of our mountain animals found here.
