Mie / Ama "Sea Women"

Did you know that there is a brave group of Japanese ladies who dive for food without modern diving equipment?

These ladies are the Ama (means “Sea Women”), and they dive to gather abalones, pearls and other seafood. You can see them in action when you visit the Shima region of Mie Prefecture. Be amazed by their ability to hold their breath in waters!

This traditional diving trade dates back to 3000 years ago. Even though what the divers wear for the dives have changed over the years, the headscarves remain the same as it is believed to be essential for warding off evil and bringing luck to the divers.
