Spectacular La Traviata on Sydney Harbour

La Traviata, Handa Opera
The impressive outdoor venue at Mrs Macquarie’s Point on Sydney Harbour Australia is the setting for La Traviata, Handa Opera which started last weekend.

La Traviata is the ultimate romantic opera – a tragic love story told in spellbindingly beautiful music. It is extravagant, devastatingly romantic and perfect for first-time opera-goers. This huge production features spectacular sets, beautiful costumes, dazzling lighting, fireworks and a 9-metre chandelier sparkling with Swarovski Elements crystals suspended above a purpose-built, shimmering stage on the waters of Sydney Harbour with spectacular views over the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The highlight is the nine-metre chandelier that arrived from across the harbour last week on a barge. You can see all the construction of the purpose-built stage on the event’s facebook page and website.

Destination NSW, Virgin Atlantic, Jetset Travelworld Group and Flight Centre have cooperated together to promote Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour

George Souris, NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts, said: "La Traviata, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is one of the greatest events in the world. It is a truly visionary project that will see Sydney Harbour transformed into the grandest stage afloat."

This monumental production features a specially built stage above the water, set against the spectacular Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, with a full orchestra, fireworks, magnificent sets and a 9 metre Swarovski crystal chandelier.

"La Traviata, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour will remind audiences both here and overseas that Sydney is one of the world's most breathtaking cities.

"The creative inspiration required to stage this production on Sydney Harbour is daring, ambitious, and bold - just like the Harbour City itself - pushing the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to major outdoor events.

"La Traviata will equal the grandeur of prestigious outdoor opera events including Aida at the Luxor, Turandot in the Forbidden City and Opera at Lake Constance in Bregenz, Austria.

"The economic benefits of the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour resonate far beyond the final curtain call." Based on 18 performances and a capacity of 54,000, Destination NSW expects that $20 million in new money will be driven into the NSW economy.

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour opened on Saturday 24 March and runs until 15 April.  For more information see the website at www.operaonsydneyharbour.com.au/
