Capture the Beauty of the Ancient Flinders Ranges on a Five-Day Photographic Retreat at Arkaba Station

The ancient landscape offers travelers a unique opportunity to explore the landscape while relishing in luxurious amenities in the Outback

Arkaba Station, one of Australia’s most beautiful outback properties, has partnered with leading travel photographer Richard I’Anson for a unique photography retreat. The five-day photography retreat in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia will take place September 20-24, 2012, at Arkaba Station, a luxury homestead property renowned for its exclusive wilderness experiences, supremely comfortable luxury camping, unique and intimate dining, and classic Aussie hospitality in the remote and beautiful Flinders Ranges.

Richard I’Anson
Richard I’Anson—author of Lonely Planet’s best-selling book Travel Photography and founder of stock photography library Lonely Planet Images—will provide hands-on direction allowing photographers to develop compositional and technical skills while in the extraordinarily diverse topography of the Flinders Ranges.

I’Anson will lead the group, a maximum of 10 photographers, in guided sessions around several backdrops throughout the private wildlife sanctuary to capture the spectacular landscape. Focal points will include the majestic and dramatic Wilpena Pound, craggy sandstone bluffs, and dry creek beds lined with river red gums. Guests can also expect to encounter various wildlife—Western Grey Kangaroos, Yellow-Footed Rock Wallabies, Emus, Wedgetail Eagles, and other inhabitants of the region. A review session of each day’s images will take place at the historic Arkaba Woolshed, followed by lunch and time to relax before the afternoon session. A three-course dinner prepared by the resident chef pairs well with a glass of South Australian wine while guests share stories about their favorite photo of the day.

Arkaba Station
Guests will spend two of the four nights in the historic Arkaba Homestead, comprised of five exclusive rooms that create an oasis of comfort and style in an otherwise rugged natural landscape. Additionally, two nights will be spent camping in Arkaba’s luxury swags—the cozy bedding of choice of Australian cowboys and pioneers—with the deluxe additions of plush mattresses and fine linen. A night out in swags under the stars allows photographers to take advantage of the rare morning and evening photo opportunities, such as long-exposure photos of the night sky, or the spectrum of colors that spill across the ridges as the sun begins to peer over the mountain ranges at dawn.

Wilpena Pound
Set against the backdrop of the Wilpena Pound in South
Australia’s Flinders Ranges, Arkaba Station is an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds, the scale and the space of Outback Australia in style. Arkaba Station is part of the hotel collection Wild Bush Luxury and is also a member of the Luxury Lodges of Australia, a collection of independent properties offering unforgettable experiences in Australia’s most inspiring and extraordinary locations. The Wild Bush Luxury philosophy brings a team of passionate guides and a few creature comforts to an immersive bush experience.

The retreat rates start at US$2,980 per person based on twin share (US$895 for single travelers) and includes all meals, select beverages, accommodation at the homestead and swag camps, on-property transport, and the five-day photography program with Richard I’Anson. Private transfers, hot-air balloon, fixed-wing scenic flights over Wilpena Pound, and other tours are optional extras.

About South Australia
Adelaide
South Australia is home to Kangaroo Island (known as the “Galapagos of Australia”), the famed Barossa wine region, and Adelaide, the charming capital city. The fourth largest of Australia’s six states, South Australia is located in the southern half of the country. Adelaide itself is a delightful jumping off point for exploring the region. Surrounded by parklands, the capital is home to just over 1 million people and the Central Business District is one square mile, perfect for exploring the fine museums, great restaurants, and the famed Central Market, the largest covered market in the Southern Hemisphere. South Australia is a haven for wine lovers. Over 60% of all exported Australian wines come from the state’s top wine regions—the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, the Coonawarra, and more. Soft adventure activities such as hiking, diving, and mountain biking abound in this nature-filled state. In fact, South Australia arguably has the most accessible wildlife in the country. Some of the best places to glimpse it are the stunning Kangaroo Island, rugged Flinders Ranges, and enchanting Gawler Ranges. Known as the “Gateway to the Outback,” South Australia is also home to Coober Pedy, the world’s opal mining capital.
