On the eve of the school holidays, New South Wales has some great events to keep the family entertained this Easter.
Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase said: “From Sydney to rural and regional NSW, our State has a packed calendar of events this Easter. A traditional highlight for families is the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show when the country comes to the city for 14 days of agricultural competitions, animal exhibitions, live entertainment and carnival fun.”
“There’s so much on offer across NSW throughout the school holiday break that families will want to stay even longer to fit it all in. Whether they are looking for single-day events, or planning to travel to experience regional NSW for an extended break, it’s a great time of year to make the most of the fortnight break,” she said.
10 FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENTS ACROSS SYDNEY AND NSW
1. Royal Easter Show (Sydney, April 6 – April 19)
The iconic Sydney Royal Easter Show at Sydney Olympic Park is a must-visit event over the Easter break, showcasing the best of Australian agriculture and country life from 6 – 19 April 2017. Rides, animals, prize-winning produce and hours of entertainment await for the whole family, and no trip to the Easter Show is complete without a visit to the famous Showbag Hall, where treats, toys and loads of fun can be found at every stall.
2. Sculpture at Scenic World (Katoomba, April 7 – May 7)
Sculpture at Scenic World 2017 celebrates its sixth exhibition, transforming the natural Jurassic rainforest with world-class sculptures. With more than 30 artworks on show, the exhibition offers exciting opportunities for art lovers, children and families to engage with art in a spectacular setting.
3. Bathurst Motor Festival (Bathurst, April 14 – April 16)
Held at the legendary Mount Panorama, The Bathurst Motor Festival is suited to families who want to get their engines racing this Easter break. The inaugural weekend festival attracted 50 race entrants and a record crowd, with 2017 expected to be bigger and better. Headlining the weekend is The Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst Six Hour, with a further five race categories supporting to provide non-stop action on-track all weekend.
4. Egyptian Mummies: Exploring Ancient Lives (Sydney, Now – April 30)
Become an archaeologist for the day at the world premiere of Egyptian Mummies: Exploring Ancient Lives, an acclaimed touring exhibition from the British Museum, now on show at the Powerhouse Museum. Six Egyptian mummies who lived and died in Egypt between 1800 and 3000 years ago will be on display alongside almost 200 objects associated with funerary practices and daily life in this rich period of history.
Also at The Powerhouse Museum, families can check out the The Wiggles exhibitions and discover the southern sky at Sydney Observatory. There is also a range of digital workshops for kids of all ages to code, create and design.
5. Egg-cellent Easter Trail at Elizabeth Farm, (Parramatta, April 16)
Explore Elizabeth Farm on an Easter-inspired kids trail. Try your hand at traditional Easter activities from egg rolling to egg-and-spoon racing, as well as vintage sports and craft with lots of chocolate treats for the kids. After the trail, families can spread out on the lawn and enjoy a home-packed picnic or refreshments from Elizabeth Farm Tearoom.
6. Hunter Valley Steamfest (Maitland, April 8 – April 9)
The Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest is one of Australia's premier festivals of steam and a great weekend event for the family to kick start the Easter school holidays. There will be steam train rides, vintage diesel rides, market stalls, road steam, mini steam train rides, face painting, the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences displays, live entertainment and kids’ activities.
7. The Great Centennial Park Egg Hunt (Sydney, April 15 – April 16)
The Easter Bunny and Bilby are returning to Centennial Parklands this Easter. Kids will be able to follow a trail map around the park to complete challenges and be rewarded with chocolate. It takes about 30-45 minutes to complete this self-led expedition. Other activities are egg or bunny related, such as an egg and spoon race, egg hunt and a family photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny and Easter Bilby.
8. Tilba Easter Festival (Batemans Bay, April 15)
Every Easter, Tilba Region comes alive with its annual Easter Festival. Fun and entertainment is on tap for all ages – live music, roaming street performers, street games with prizes, art and craft displays, demonstrations, market stalls and lots of delicious food. Easter Saturday is the one day each year when the main street is closed to traffic and open to a huge array of culture and festivities.
9. Nundle Go For Gold Chinese Easter Festival (Tamworth, April 15 – April 16)
Nundle Go for Gold Chinese Easter Festival is a celebration of Nundle's goldfields history and the Chinese and European miners who helped form the town in the mid to late 1800s.
The festival includes Chinese dance performances twice daily by the Sydney-based Australian Yau Kung Mu Association and Multicultural Communities Council of NSW, live music, gold panning for $1,000 worth of genuine Nundle gold, about 100 food, produce, craft and bric-a-brac market stalls and children's activities including animal nursery, jumping castle, magician, story time, and face painting.
10. School Holidays at The Australian Museum (Sydney, April 8 – April 23)
Children aged 4-12 years are invited to join in the fun at the Australian Museum on the Easter long weekend for a family EGG-stravaganza. Experience an egg hunt with a difference. Equipped with a trail map and sense of adventure, children search for Australian animals and their eggs in the museum galleries.
