Highlighting artworks by 60 artists from 21 countries across Chiang Rai city and Chiang Saen’s Golden Triangle area from 9 December 2023 to 30 April 2024.
The third edition of the Thailand Biennale is scheduled to take place from 9 December 2023 to 30 April 2024, in Chiang Rai.
Thailand Biennale Chiang Rai 2023 will highlight artworks by 60 artists from 21 countries under the theme “The Open World” at key venues in the city, including the Chiang Rai International Art Museum (CIAM), Wat Rong Khun or the White Temple, Baan Dam Museum, Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park, the Mekong Basin Civilisation Museum, Rai Cherntawan Meditation Centre, Chiang Rai Train Library, and Singh Park Chiang Rai. In Chiang Saen district, the main sites are the Golden Triangle area, Wat Pa Sak, and Chiang Saeng National Museum.
There will be more than 10 pavilions presented by local and international curators and artists, including the Korean Pavilion, MoMA Warsaw Pavilion, Production Zomia Pavilion, Sala MaPavilion, Phan Pavilion, and International Watercolour Artists Group.
Throughout the five months, there will be collateral events in collaboration with local communities, including musical performances by multi-ethnic groups, film screenings, seminars, and an open house of over 30 artist studios in Chiang Rai.
The Thailand Biennale is an international contemporary art exhibition initiated by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture under the Ministry of Culture. The event was launched in Krabi in 2018 and was rotated to Nakhon Ratchasima in 2021. Along with Chiang Rai, all three cities were chosen to host the event because of their potential as the pioneers of the Ministry’s “Art City” campaign.
