Hey Alexa, is A.I. here to stay?

If you’re fascinated and terrified and tired of A.I. we hear you. But Chat GPT is just the tip of the iceberg, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, it’s going into ever more fascinating places, fast. Here are four of the best, worst, weird and certainly most interesting ways A.I. is being used.

1. A.I. holidays

AdventureGenie  is the the world’s first RV and camping travel planning tool powered by artificial intelligence. It claims to “think like actual travellers” and “make it easy to turn a vision into a great trip, with all the planning tools in one place”. While we laugh at the bygone days of scrambling through the white pages while driving 80km/hr, perhaps this is a sign that navigation apps like Google Maps will soon be a thing we giggle about too.

2 A.I. dating

The business of dating is hot property, and the world of Spike Jonze’s HER may be closer than you think. Teaser A.I. has a created a chatbot service designed to mimick a user’s personality. With the right prompts, your date bot can do all the small talk for you, assessing matches and alleviating anxiety-inducing scenarios like like ghosting and rejection. CupidBot, which is largely aimed at straight men, “swipes and chats for you on dating apps so you can skip to the good part”. But in dating, isn’t rejection part of the game, or should we simply let A.I. do all the talk so we can skip straight to the walk?

3 A.I. photography

Like dating, we all know it’s not just about a pretty picture. Nikon Peru are challenging the hype and hysteria around deep fake imagery with ‘Natural Intelligence’, an advertising campaign that cleverly showcases nature at its most jaw dropping when captured in the right light, and with the right camera. Rather than taking a stance against machine learning and mimicking fear-inducing headlines around machine learning, Nikon stands out from competitors by reminding us that A.I.-generated images are cool, but nothing is as cool as capturing the real thing, for real.

4 A.I. ads

Mustafa Suleyman, one of the cofounders of DeepMind, says that the generative A.I. we are now using will lead to the widespread use of interactive A.I.. Often portrayed with negative consequences in famous films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Terminator franchise, these bots will be able to carry out tasks you set for them by calling on other software and people to get stuff done. Now, human-mimmicking robots may make you think of Arnold Schwarzennegger with a leather jacket and Harley, but interactive A.I. isn’t as farfetched as it sounds. This blurring of human gesture, business and interactive potential has already popped up through a series of deepfake Chinese influencers. Appearing with 24/7 live streams on Taobao, China’s most popular e-commerce platform, these eerie personalities flood the system with products and discounts.
