Pyeongsa-ri Added to UNWTO’s 2022 List of Best Tourism Villages

Pyeongsari Park
Pyeongsa-ri in Hadong county, Gyeongsangnam-do province, South Korea has been named in the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) 2022 list of Best Tourism Villages. The list, announced in December 2022, recognises 32 villages from 18 countries as outstanding rural tourism destinations with a commitment to economic, social and environmental innovation and sustainability.

Pyeongsa-ri was selected on account of its preservation of history and regional culture through literature themed tourism initiatives, eco-friendly farming practices and innovation as a “smart tourism city” due to its adoption of digital systems and multimedia.

The construction of the village was partially based on the village introduced in “Toji” (meaning “The Land”), a 16-volume piece of Korean literature.

The village comprises 14 traditional Korean “hanok” buildings reflecting life of the late Joseon era. Visitors have the chance to stay overnight in some of the buildings for a “hanok stay” experience. The location has also served as a filming location for productions such as the hit K-drama “Mr Sunshine”.

Nestled between the banks of the Seomjingang River and the foot of Jirisan Mountain, Pyeongsa-ri Field is a popular spectacle for tourists. The rice paddies are sustained by “dumbeong” reservoirs - an ancient, eco-friendly irrigation method used to preserve water through months of drought. Dumbeong were designated a National Agricultural Heritage in 2019.

The village also maintains its traditional agricultural roots by farming tea. The elderly community benefits by selling produce such as rice and tea to local companies making the village carbon neutral and self-sustainable.

Pyeongsa-ri is accessible from Seoul within three hours via a combination of high-speed rail and local buses.
