Can you spot the snow monsters?

Each winter a unique weather phenomenon turns trees on the Zao mountains into strange 'snow monsters' called juhyo.

Cold air on the upper slopes of the mountain freezes water droplets onto the trees, which get bigger and bigger throughout the season (December-March).

You can see these unique figures while skiing or snowboarding at Zao Onsen Ski Resort.

Non-skiers are encouraged to hire a private guide, or can hop on the Nightcruiser snowmobile to cruise the slopes in the evening and see them illuminated with colourful lights.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a 40-minute bus ride from Yamagata Station.
