The 4.5-star Observatory won the Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism for the second time, as well as the gold award for best Deluxe Accommodation.
The sustainability award is the latest in a long line of industry acknowledgements of the hotel's green philosophy and practices, so what better way to mark the occasion than substituting green smoothies for traditional champagne flutes!
In recent years the hotel's environmental sustainability initiatives have been acknowledged with local, state, national and international awards including in the 2014 World Boutique Hotel Awards, NSW's 2015 Green Globe Awards and the 2015 World Environment Day Award for sustainability leadership.
It's thought only three hotels Australia-wide are officially certified as 100 per cent carbon neutral: the others are Wolgan Valley Resort in the Blue Mountains and the Alto Hotel, Melbourne. Government-endorsed agencies are responsible for certifying a property's carbon status.
The Observatory's number of awards for environmental consciousness is considered Australia's most extensive. The hotel, originally known as “Port Macquarie's best address” for its ocean-front location, has now changed its tagline to “Leading Green Hotel”. Hotel directors Chris and Trish Denny say there are many more ecological innovations to come under The Observatory's “Green Future” program.
