Smithfield Conservation Park’s exciting new purpose-built cross country mountain-bike track, has received the thumbs-up from Australian and World Champion mountain bikers, Paul van Der Ploeg and Jenni King.
Assistant Minister for Tourism and Member for Cairns Gavin King celebrated the official completion of work on the track by joining the World Champion mountain bikers for a ride.
“I am looking forward to the world’s best mountain bike riders coming to Tropical North Queensland for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup 2014,” Mr King said.
“The event will provide a significant boost to the local tourism industry and further cement Tropical North Queensland’s reputation as a premier sporting events destination, showcasing the region globally.
“Cairns also secured the rights to host the 2016 World Cup and 2017 World Mountain Bike and Trials Championships.
“Securing these three mountain biking events is a fantastic example of industry and government working together. It also supports the destination positioning of Cairns – Adventurous by Nature.
“International events like this will help achieve the Queensland Government’s goal of doubling annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.
“I congratulate World Trail for their expertise in constructing the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park trails to such a high standard to support the World Cup events.”
Cycling Australia Head of Marketing and Communications Ben Godkin said the launch of the completion of the track was a landmark day for the people who had worked long and hard to make the world-class courses a reality.
“We’re delighted to have riders of the calibre of Jenni and Paul here in Smithfield to put the cross-country course to the test for the first time,” Mr Godkin said.
“Their feedback will be a vital look ahead to welcoming a selection of the world’s best Mountain Bike riders to Cairns for the UCI World Cup in late April.”
