Member for the South Coast, Shelley Hancock has announced that the world’s largest Hobie 16 World Championships have kicked off in Huskisson, Jervis Bay NSW.
The pinnacle competition for the largest and most popular catamaran class in the world, the Hobie 16 World Championships will see more than 380 teams, comprising 500 competitors from 27 countries battle it out during the 16-day regatta on the idyllic waters of Jervis Bay.
“We warmly welcome both the record number of entrants as well as visitors to our region for the Hobie 16 World Championships, which will see all competitors sailing in identical Hobie 16 catamarans in a single class, multi-hull event,” Ms Hancock said.
“Around 60 of the Hobie 16 Catamarans have been built locally in Jervis Bay, injecting in excess of $750,000 into the local economy ahead of the event.”
In line with its commitment to promoting the Regional NSW Events Calendar, Destination NSW is supporting the Hobie 16 World Championships.
Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase said the event will bring welcome benefits for the region and NSW.
“Destination NSW estimates that the total economic impact for the duration of the regatta will be close to $3.4 million for the region,” Ms Chipchase said.
“Competitors and visitors to the Hobie 16 World Championships should also try to make some time to explore the natural beauty of the Shoalhaven area and the many lifestyle attractions on offer.”
Now in its 38th year, the event will run from Friday 31 January to Saturday 15 February 2014.
