MCEC Chief Executive Peter King acknowledged the significant milestone for the Program and Ambassadors' roles in securing and hosting international conferences to the city.
"From 40 Ambassadors in 2005, the program has come a long way and now includes 131 passionate and influential Melburnians who promote the city's intellect and attract investment in their fields of expertise.
"Through their hard work and contribution, MCEC and its partners deliver some of the largest and most prestigious conferences in the world which connect thought leaders and bring them together to network and be educated, showcasing Melbourne's knowledge in fields like medicine, science and technology." he said.
One of the most recent conference wins which attributed to the half a billion figure was the XIII International Congress of Dermatology 2021.
Ambassador Professor Rodney Sinclair has been appointed Secretary General for the meeting which is set to attract more than 2500 delegates from around the world over four days and generate in excess of $11 million for the economy.
Peter King recognised the collective effort of the Program from Club Melbourne's partners including the Melbourne Convention Bureau and Victorian State Government.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Louise Asher said Melbourne has a reputation for hosting world-class events and conferences, and the Club Melbourne Ambassador Program significantly contributes in strengthening this reputation through the major business events Ambassadors help to secure.
"Club Melbourne Ambassadors harness the passion of our city's elite thinkers with a common goal of contributing to Victoria's economic growth and international reputation.
"This achievement by the Program is a collaborative effort and one that promotes our expertise around the world. It brings thought leadership to the state and showcases Melbourne as an outstanding business events destination," she said.
The Melbourne Convention Bureau's Chief Executive Officer, Karen Bolinger, said the Club Melbourne Ambassador Program had exceeded all expectation since its inception.
"The ability to capitalise on our leadership position in the global knowledge sector and to leverage Victoria's exceptional minds to bring business events to the state is a huge advantage for us.
"We are exceptionally lucky to have the calibre of Ambassadors on the Program that we do, as the knowledge they harbour contributes significantly to winning major international conferences for the city," she said.
Over the next 12 months Ambassadors are involved in the World Cardiology Congress, International Association for Plant Biotechnology Congress, International Conference on Systems Biology and the World Cancer Congress.
The program was officially relaunched in August 2013 to address increasing international competition and create an even stronger, focused and more supportive network to secure and host international conferences in Melbourne.
Owned and led by MCEC, with collaboration and support from the Melbourne Convention Bureau and the Victorian State Government, the program has delivered 79 international conferences worth in excess of $500 million to become the world's most influential Ambassador programs.
