Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando

Universal Halloween Horror Nights
During the day, Universal Studios is a fun-filled theme park providing thrills for everyone. But for select nights throughout the Halloween period, it transforms into something that is not for the faint-hearted. Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) brings the movie magic literally jumping out at you for a spooky, fright-filled night. Universal Studios has helped produce some of the most well known, highly regarded horror films over the years. For the past two decades they have been bringing movies and television shows to life, along with their original content created specifically for this event, showcasing their production skills and really pioneering this style of event.

HHN utilises 'Houses' and 'Scare Zones' to bring the fright to life, as well as some shows. This year there were a total of 9 houses to walk through, each with their own theme that will haunt you as you explore within. They use a combination of live actors, animatronics, props, lighting, special effects and even smell to get through to your inner fears. Even if you haven't seen the film or TV series, you are sure to get a fright out of it. And if you want to know more before heading in, you can easily look up a brief description of the house on Universal's mobile app to get some context. One of the standouts this year was 'Saw: The Games Of Jigsaw' which drew from the popular franchise and re-created some of the fan-favourite moments from the series. And of course, those ghastly pigs made an appearance.

Throughout the park there are 5 themed 'Scare Zones' in which you have to walk through to get to your next destination. These contain roving performers, sets and props to suit the theme. For example, clowns will jump out at you wielding chainsaws, or you'll be distracted looking at a set piece when an alien rushes you from behind. These are a brilliant way to add more scare to the night as they can entertain massive crowds, alleviating the stress on the house queues.

Another clever thing they've done to help with crowd control is having most of the main rides open as well. This gives you a chance to have a break from the horror and experience some regular thrills. And the great thing is that there are usually barely any lines, as most people come for the horror part alone. This enables you to re-ride your favourite attraction one more time, without queuing up for hours.

If you are going with the intent to experience all the houses, you should invest in an Express Pass. Although you will have to fork out some more money, it is well worth it as you are able to skip the regular lines and jump to the front of the queue. The most we had to wait was about 10 minutes when the Express line was very popular for a house. Normal queues for houses can reach 120+ minute wait times, which can really chew into your time at the park. It would be a squeeze to fit everything in without Express.

There are two must-see shows that are only performed a limited number of times each night, and if you want a good position to see them you should get there 20 minutes before showtime as they are both very popular. The crowd-favourite Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure returns for their Farewell Tour, giving a satirical take on all things pop culture, and taking some very obvious stabs at Universal's direct competition. The show is filled with all sorts of characters, many dancers, and lots of impressive lighting and pyrotechnics. It is a hilarious production and well worth seeing. Remember that it is popular, so arrive early to get a good seat.

The other show sees the return of The Academy of Villains with the show Afterlife. The award-winning performance troupe presents an intense dance show, unlike anything you've seen before, with mind-bending dance routines and a number of special acts. Of course, no dance show would be complete without some audience participation, so if you're keen to show off some skills make sure you're up the front and are wearing the right shoes.
