The Southerner Returns: New Zealand’s Iconic Rail Journey Makes a Grand Comeback in 2026

The Southerner
A Legendary Rail Adventure Reborn

Great Journeys New Zealand has officially announced the highly anticipated return of The Southerner, the beloved rail journey reconnecting Christchurch and Dunedin. After sell-out seasons in 2024 and 2025, this iconic experience will again depart daily on 22, 23, 24 and 25 May 2026, with more 2026 dates to be revealed soon. Its revival offers travellers another chance to rediscover one of New Zealand’s most historic and picturesque rail routes.

Originally launched in the 1970s, The Southerner became a favourite for generations who travelled through the sweeping coastlines, rolling farmlands and striking southern landscapes of the South Island. The 2026 edition blends this nostalgia with a new era of slow, scenic and meaningful travel—an experience increasingly sought by both domestic and international visitors.

Comfort, Class and Culinary Delights Onboard

Guests can choose from Scenic class or the award-winning Scenic Plus service, both designed to maximise comfort and enjoyment. Spacious carriages, generous legroom and premium seating ensure a relaxed journey, while the onboard café and licensed bar showcase local beverages, barista-crafted coffee, and a tempting selection of meals and snacks. With every detail considered, the journey becomes just as unforgettable as the destination.

Travellers wishing to explore Dunedin further can enhance their journey with curated multi-day packages highlighting the region’s rich culture and flavour-filled culinary scene.

A Rail Experience Loved Across Generations

Nadine Koszler, Head of Product and Customer Experience at Great Journeys New Zealand, says demand for The Southerner remains remarkably strong, proving just how deeply the journey resonates with travellers. She highlights that the revived service reflects New Zealand’s growing appetite for unique, meaningful and immersive travel experiences—qualities that rail travel captures beautifully.

A Stunning Welcome to Ōtepoti Dunedin

Dunedin Railway Station
Dunedin Mayor Sophie Barker applauds the increasing demand that has led to additional dates for 2026. She notes that rail travel continues to rise in popularity worldwide, offering a slower, more scenic and memorable alternative to road travel.

Passengers arriving in Ōtepoti will step directly into one of the world’s most spectacular historic railway stations, right in the heart of the city. Visitors can then add half-day journeys such as the Taieri Gorge and the Seasider, and enjoy an overnight stay before returning north.

Rail Tourism on the Rise

Rebekah Jenkins, General Manager of Dunedin Railways, says the return of The Southerner for a third consecutive year highlights the growing momentum behind rail tourism in the South Island. Coupled with the Taieri Gorge and, for the first time, the Seasider rail experiences, the 2026 season offers more ways for visitors to explore Dunedin and Otago’s dramatic landscapes.

New Multi-Day Packages for 2026

Alongside standard train fares, Great Journeys New Zealand has refreshed its selection of multi-day packages. A standout addition for 2026 is The Seasider Express & Castle Escape Package, a two-night adventure featuring the Seasider journey, dinner at Arc Brewery, and entry to the iconic Larnach Castle.

Returning favourites include overnight Dunedin packages, local tours, dining experiences, city attractions, and the ever-popular Taieri Gorge Package. Scenic Plus premium service will be available on all departures, offering hosted service, premium seating and regionally inspired cuisine.
