They came, they played, and they moved hearts across the outback. Now, the remarkable performers of Headliners—a band formed entirely of artists living with disability—are set to return to the red-dirt stage of the 2025 Mundi Mundi Bash for a powerful encore performance. The announcement comes as the festival nears sell-out status, with over 95% of tickets already snapped up by eager music lovers from across the country.
Born from a TV Series, Now a Festival Favourite
Headliners was born from the celebrated 2024 ABC TV series of the same name, created by Endemol Shine Australia. Initially two separate groups—Sync or Swim and Together With Strangers—they were mentored by industry legends Elly-May Barnes, Ella Hooper and Tim Rogers. The success of their debut at last year’s festival inspired the formation of a united band, now returning to perform on their own merit, no longer under the watchful eye of cameras but with full support from the Australian music community.
“We’re thrilled to have them back, this time as one unified band,” says Greg Donovan, Managing Director of the Outback Music Festival Group and founder of Mundi Mundi Bash. “Their performance last year reshaped what inclusivity means in live music.”
Voices That Resonate Beyond the Stage
The members of Headliners represent a cross-section of talent from NSW, Queensland and Victoria—and their stories are as compelling as their music. From Sydney-based vocalist Sonnet Cure, who is deaf in one ear, to Buderim rapper MC Wheels, who lives with spinal muscular atrophy, every performer brings a unique sound and perspective. Each band member shares a deep connection to their journey and the importance of being seen on a national stage. “Last year’s show was the greatest moment of my career,” says MC Wheels. “To be able to do that again is mind-blowing.” Guitarist Mikky from Queensland adds, “This year, we’re here on our own merit—and that makes it all the more incredible.”
Performing Before the Stars, and Among Them
Headliners will take the stage on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 20, playing for the early entry crowd just before festival favourites Chocolate Starfish. The performance promises to set the tone for a weekend filled with iconic acts including Missy Higgins, The Cat Empire, Hoodoo Gurus, The Angels, Kasey Chambers, and Birds of Tokyo.
Even with the absence of Sarah McLeod—who is touring the Edinburgh Fringe—fans will be treated to a stacked lineup of Australian music legends. From Kate Ceberano and Leo Sayer to Thirsty Merc, Rose Tattoo, and Shannon Noll, it’s a festival program as big and bold as the outback horizon.
A Festival Like No Other
Set against the cinematic backdrop of the Mundi Mundi Plains near Broken Hill, this bucket-list event is more than just music. It’s where world record dance-offs meet Mad Max cosplay, camel rides, and the infamous Mundi Undie Run, raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This year’s Bash is also easier to access than ever, thanks to a newly sealed 2.5km stretch of road straight to the festival gates. It remains proudly BYO, dog-friendly, and welcoming to thousands who crave community, culture and connection under the vast outback sky.
