The General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) made the announcement on Wednesday, saying the Southeast Asian nation has attracted 12.9 million international tourists up to now, rising more than 29 percent year-on-year, Xinhua reports.
Tourism from South Korea, China and Russia account for the fastest growth, with a year-on-year increase of 56.4 percent, 48.6 percent and 32.3 percent respectively.
GSO said the huge increase had been driven by the government’s promotion campaign around the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, hosted by Vietnam’s central Da Nang city in October.
Vietnam had earlier pledged to launch large-scale promotional campaigns for its major tourist attractions, as well as clean up and improve sub-standard travel agencies in order to lure more Chinese tourists.
China has remained Vietnam’s largest visitor market for the past decade, with an average growth rate of 20 percent between 2010 and 2016.
