Geological Site of Satun in the Deep South

The southern border province of Satun is popularly known among visitors as a major destination for eco-tourism. Numerous layers of rocks along the coastal line, mountains, and islands off the Andaman Sea in Satun are all important in terms of geological features.

Scientific discovery shows that Satun is an area of fossilized remains in the Paleozoic era, which ran from about 540 million to 280 million years ago. In this era, dinosaurs had not yet come into existence on earth.

Satun was declared a "geopark,” at the provincial level on 14 August 2014 and at the national level on 6 December 2016. It has become the first geological park in Thailand. The Satun Geopark houses many fossilized remains from prehistoric periods.

Efforts are being made to upgrade the Satun Geopark into one of the global geoparks, to be recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Satun is waiting for results of the assessment by UNESCO, which defines a geopark as an area containing geological heritage sites of particular importance.

Geoparks are also recognized for their archaeological, ecological, and cultural value. They are usually connected with diverse ethnic cultures. The Satun Geopark covers four districts: Thung Wa, Manang, La-ngu, and Mueang Satun.

Satun province will hold a Satun Geopark Fossil Festival to make this province better known as a geological site. Knowledge and information about this area will be disseminated, so that everyone will be aware of local geological resources and help in geo-conservation. The festival, the fifth of its kind, will be held from 19 to 28 February 2018 at a field in front of the Thung Wa district office.

Satun is a peaceful province where Buddhist and Muslim Thais live happily in harmony. Since it has many tourist attractions, the province welcomes a large number of visitors, both Thais and foreigners, each year.

It also boasts an abundance of fossils and

has great potential for being developed as a world-class destination for sustainable tourism.
