Five Opera experiences in Sydney and NSW this Autumn

Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour - Carmen

1) Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour - Carmen, 24 March – 23 April 2017

Set against the spectacular backdrop of Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House and the city skyline, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is a huge part of the city’s cultural landscape, combining all of the things Sydney does best: world-class opera, sunset drinks, fine dining, and spectacle all on the harbour's edge.

In 2017, visitors will fall in love with Opera’s favourite femme fatale, Carmen in Opera Australia’s vivacious and passionate production of Bizet’s Carmen.

2. Two Weddings, One Bride 29 April – 22 October 2017

Two Weddings, One Bride is a fun new work that draws on the winning formula of combining much-loved tunes with a quirky and entertaining storyline. Guaranteed to deliver plenty of laughs along with a beautiful operetta repertoire performed by some of Australia’s finest singers, with gorgeous costumes and a fabulous set.

3. La Bohème on until 24 March

Opera Australia’s popular production of Gale Edwards’ La Bohème returns to the Sydney Opera House for another exciting season, this time featuring Australian sweetheart Greta Bradman in her role debut as Mimì. This glittering production provides the perfect setting for the heart-wrenching love story, filled with the familiar arias of Puccini’s most famous opera.

4.  Tosca 17 February – 31 March

Tosca is a war drama and a gripping story of love, lust and betrayal that unfolds at breakneck pace. Director John Bell's, critically acclaimed production relocates the opera to Nazi-occupied Rome, and features a stellar cast including three exceptional singers in the principals roles of Tosca, Cavaradossi and Scarpia performing some of the most powerful music in opera.

6. Opera in the Paddock – 24 March in Armidale, 25 March in Inverell

As the sun sets and kookaburras take flight, the stars appear and the magic of the opera begins. Opera North West is delighted to have two performances in New England in 2017. This is a unique experience where Australia’s brightest stars come to the region to perform opera classics from Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Offenbach along with musical favourites by Lerner and Loewe.
