Queensland Rail: Mega milestone as Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Trains reach 5 mn kilometres

Queensland Rail’s Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Train’s have reached a significant milestone, having now travelled over five million kilometres each since first being introduced in 1998.

Consisting of six passenger cars including a business class option, a galley car for refreshments, and two lightweight high performance cars, the Tilt Trains were introduced to provide customers with the most modern commuter train experience in Australia.

A/Executive General Manager Customer Service Alison Crosby said over the past 16 years, the Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Trains have made more than 3.7 million journeys, covering on average 990 kilometres each day and approximately 350,000 kilometres a year per train.

“The Tilt Trains are among our most popular long distance services because they give locals and visitors the chance to escape with ease to the Central Coast of Queensland,” Ms Crosby said.
“One of the biggest attractions of the service is its ability to tilt up to five degrees in each direction and travel up to 160 kilometres per hour getting customers to their destinations safely and on time.
“We have a dedicated team at Queensland Rail who specialise in maintaining the Tilt Trains as well as passionate Onboard Customer Service crew who continue to take pride in delivering safe, reliable and comfortable travel for our customers.”

Ms Crosby said Queensland Rail was a proud supporter of the Queensland tourism industry, helping to keep regional communities connected through regular Tilt Train services to and from Rockhampton and Bundaberg.

“In the last financial year we had more than 185,000 passenger journeys on the Tilt Train’s stopping at all regional points in between including Gympie, Maryborough, Howard, Bundaberg, Miriam Vale, Gladstone and Mount Larcom,” she said.

“A natural drawcard for tourists to the Central Coast region is travelling by the Tilt Train to Maryborough West where they are coached to Hervey Bay, home to the majestic humpback whales, one of the best whale watching spots in Australia.

“Visitors also take the Tilt Train to Bundaberg, where they can experience once in a lifetime encounters with nesting marine turtles at Mon Repos beach just outside Bundaberg.
