The Ancient Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine
Fukuoka’s Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine is dedicated to the Heian scholar, Sugawara Michizane, later deified as “Tenjin” – the deity of learning.

Dating back 1,100 years, its sprawling grounds feature 6,000 plum trees, including the legendary “tobiume”, which is first to blossom within the shrine grounds.

The path to the shrine is lined with stores selling “umegae mochi”, grilled rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste.

Before major exam periods, students from all over Japan visit this shrine to pray for success.
