The 2017 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report ranked 136 countries and regions, comparing how well countries deliver sustainable economic and social benefits through their respective travel and tourism sectors.
China welcomed nearly 57 million tourists in 2016, which accounted for more than 20 percent of international arrivals in Asia, according to the report.
The WEF report credits the improvement of China’s tourism competitiveness ranking to the country’s increased international openness, improved information and communications technology readiness and further investments in its tourist service infrastructure, as well as China’s increased prioritization of its travel and tourism industry.
The report also recognized China as a largest source market in the region, with nearly 128 million departures registered in 2015. The potential for growth is significant, as the report claims that just five percent of China’s population holds a passport.
