Top 5 spots to check out the colours of Autumn in Kyoto

1. Arashiyama Maple Festival

Arashiyama and the area around Togetsu Bridge (pictured) is one of the most famous and popular autumn sightseeing spots in Kyoto. Traditional boats will run on Oi River and many fun events will be held on the banks for the day of festivities.

3. Eikando Zenrijin Temple

Even amongst all the many autumn colour spots in Kyoto, the beauty of the autumn leafage at Eikando is so remarkable that poems have been scribed about it. Due to the attractiveness of the autumn leaves stretching along the rocks like a wall, it is often called “Rock wall autumn leaves”. In the evening the temple grounds are lit up to let visitors enjoy the autumn leaves in a mysterious atmosphere. A must-see is the magical sight of the Tahoto Pagoda which stands along the mountain side at the highest place inside the temple grounds and is wrapped up in autumn leaves.

4. Nanzenji Temple

Over 300 maple trees in the 15 000 ㎡ temple grounds change into one autumn colour. From the top of the building the city and temple grounds can be taken in all at once. The highlight is the beauty of the head priest’s garden created by the famous gardener Kobori Masakazu.

5. Kibune Momiji Lantern Light-up 

7 Nov – 29 Nov 2015
Lanterns will be set up along the road in the village of Kibune and the surroundings. Around Kifune Shrine, coloured maple leaves will be lit up at night. Maple leaves along Eizan Railways, between Kibune-guchi Stn. and Ninose Stn., and Ichihara Stn. and Ninose Stn. will be also beautifully lit up.
