British Football Giants Chelsea FC confirmed to play exclusively in Sydney

Brett Emerton
One of the world's most popular football teams and current English Premier League leaders Chelsea FC will play an Australian exclusive match in Sydney secured today by Destination NSW.

Chelsea will play a friendly game against Sydney FC on Tuesday 2 June at ANZ Stadium, it is 41 years since Chelsea were last on Australian shores.

Visitors will have the chance to watch the likes of: John Terry, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa just one week after they battle for the Premier League title.

The news follows the recent announcement that eight-time FA Cup champions, Tottenham Hotspur, will play Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 30 May.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer, Sandra Chipchase said the match, secured by Destination NSW in partnership with ANZ Stadium, reinforces the State's reputation for securing sporting events exclusively to Sydney.

“In 2013 we welcomed English champions Manchester United who took on the A-League All Stars in front of a packed ANZ Stadium. In 2014, Italian giants Juventus went head to head with the A-League All Stars in an exciting match which kept fans on the edge of their seat until the final whistle. We can't wait for this tradition to continue with Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur matches in 2015,” Ms Chipchase said.

The visit by English champions Manchester United attracted close to 30,000 visitors to Sydney in 2013, whilst Juventus brought over 10,000 visitors to Sydney.

The blockbuster match will be a must-see event for all football and sporting fans, with Sydney continuing to win exclusive sporting events. In 2015, Sydney and NSW has already played host to the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing at Manly Beach, the AFC Asian Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup. This latest addition further complements a bumper sporting calendar which will include the World Rally Championships, Game One of the State of Origin Series, the Bledisloe Cup, the 2015 Netball World Cup and the 2015 FIT Touch Football World Cup.
