Dallas CVB President and CEO Phillip J. Jones and Dallas-Fort Worth Airport CEO Sean Donohue announced the location of the 2016 Global Summit at the close of the 2015 WTTC Global Summit in Madrid, Spain.
“The WTTC Global Summit is the most influential travel and tourism event of the year, bringing together hundreds of leaders from public sector organizations and private sector companies to tackle the most important issues in our industry,” said David Scowsill, president and CEO of the WTTC. “Travel and tourism are some of the most important generators of jobs and wealth in the world, contributing more than $7.6 trillion in GDP to the world economy and supporting 277 million jobs, which is one in 11 jobs on the planet.”
The United States is the world's largest travel and tourism economy, contributing $1.4 trillion and 13.9 million jobs to the economy by the close of 2015.
“The travel and tourism industry creates jobs, economic growth, well-being and prosperity,” Scowsill said. “I am delighted that Dallas will host the 2016 Global Summit, and we were particularly struck by the weight of public and private sector support, forming a partnership to bid for the event.”
Dallas is only the third U.S. city to host the Global Summit in the event's 15-year history, beating out Lisbon and Bangkok, Thailand, for the 2016 event. Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas are the only other U.S. cities to host the summit.
“We are excited and honored that the WTTC has selected Dallas to gather the world's top travel and tourism executives,” said Jones. “This important meeting of elite leaders further puts Dallas on an international stage and confirms our work to position Dallas as a global leader.”
“The decision to bring this important gathering to Dallas confirms that our city is growing as an international destination, with an increasing number of direct flights out of DFW International Airport,” said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. “Over the past several months Dallas has hosted the New Cities Summit, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and now this prestigious global organization has recognized Dallas as a key city and region within the United States.”
The two-day event will draw about 500 guests, including international journalists, global tourism ministers and CEOs of major travel and tourism companies.
