Red Dog becomes 'blue' in new movie

A new movie about the legendary Australian canine Red Dog, will begin filming in the Pilbara region in WA's North West, later this year.

The original Red Dog story was based on the canine's life in the 1970's, when Red Dog hitched rides and travelled by foot through the Pilbara, adopting people and uniting the community along the way.

The new movie, Blue Dog, will explore the early events leading up to Red Dog's discovery, and his ultimate rise from ordinary dog to Australian legend.

Like Red Dog, Blue Dog will showcase WA's extraordinary landscapes and filming locations.

Red Dog earned more than $21 million at the box office, making it the ninth highest grossing Australian film of all time - it was also the highest selling Australian DVD of all time.
