New Lighthouse Audio Tours to Target Chinese Market

Visitors can now experience the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse via audio tours of the precinct, available in Mandarin, English and German.

The Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA) officially launched the tours yesterday, to coincide with an organised visit to the lighthouse by a group of VIP executives from China Southern Airlines and media from China.

The audio player takes the visitor on a journey exploring the rich history of Cape Leeuwin, allowing visitors to explore and learn the personal stories and experiences of the lighthouse keepers and their families, the extreme weather conditions seen at Cape Leeuwin as well as the very real and emotional shipwreck history of the area.

The audio tours also highlight the unique flora and fauna which has adapted to the harsh environment, in addition to helping visitors to understand the general remoteness and isolation experienced when living at the lighthouse.

The AMRTA's CEO Pip Close advised that the lighthouse tours were predominantly designed for the Chinese market, as well as providing a more cost effective option for people who choose not to climb the lighthouse tower.

"The new audio tours at Cape Leeuwin provide a great option for Mandarin and German speaking visitors who may not have been able to easily interpret the signage or understand an English speaking tour guide," said Ms Close.

"China and Germany are two of the region's biggest target markets so we have launched the audio tours in these additional languages, however we hope to expand on this in the future to include other languages.

"The audio tours use state of the art MP3 players which allows visitors to explore the grounds of the lighthouse at their own pace, whilst also providing a more cost effective and less physically demanding option for people who may not want to climb the lighthouse tower," she said.

Ms Close advised that the AMRTA's Jayme Hatcher was manager of the audio tours project.

"Jayme has done a wonderful job of getting this major initiative off the ground and to her credit, the new tours are proving to be a huge success," said Ms Close.

The tours have been running since the start of the new year as a soft launch to ensure they were technologically sound and are now officially a part of the Cape Leeuwin experience.
