Canberra Hosts Australian Premieres as Part of Enlighten 2017

Returning for the seventh year, Enlighten will illuminate the nation's capital from 3-12 March 2017 with a program featuring stunning installations, roving performances, dining experiences, live music and spectacular architectural projections on six of Canberra's iconic national attractions.

The program also includes a number of Australian firsts including On the Wings Of Freedom, which comes to Canberra fresh from its display in the UK. Created by art collective Aether & Hemera, this interactive installation takes its form as a cloud of colourful butterflies which hover above the ground in continuous, upward flight. Butterflies are a symbol of metamorphosis and freedom across cultures and are a natural fit to call Canberra home as a place that encourages growth culturally and socially.

A simple design with a powerful impact, CLOUD is created from repurposed incandescent light bulbs and pull-chain switches. For the first time in Australia, this piece of work encourages participants to play puppeteer and in doing so, orchestrate the performance for onlookers outside of the cloud. Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett, the Canadian artists responsible for this artwork, ask those who interact with the artwork to re-imagine the purpose that domestic waste and seemingly insignificant objects play in urban spaces.

Throughout the 11 days of the program, 10 of Australia's most beloved cultural institutions open their doors after dark, inviting visitors to see them in a new light. Six iconic buildings in the Parliamentary Triangle (Australian Parliament House, National Portrait Gallery, National Library of Australia, Museum of Australian Democracy, National Gallery of Australia and Questacon) and several satellite venues (Canberra Glassworks, National Arboretum of Canberra, National Zoo and Aquarium and the Australian National Botanic Gardens) will play host to visitors as they are lit up for colourful and moving displays.

While you wait for the sun to set and the lights to be switched on, indulge in the best of Asian street food at the Enlighten Night Noodle Markets. Open daily from 5pm, it's the perfect starting point for your evening.

With projections commencing from 8pm and running until 10pm Sunday to Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, this is an event not to be missed.

In 2017, the festival will partner with international airline carrier Singapore Airlines as the presenting partner for this year's event. Aligning with Singapore Airlines will help promote the event to new markets in Singapore and Wellington – where the airline is operating direct international flights to Canberra.
