THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

A trip to China is incomplete without conquering UNESCO listed Great Wall of China. On this tour you will travel into the rugged mountain landscapes north of Beijing to the magnificent Great Wall. Once on top of this ancient structure, you’ll find views that are magnificent and the experience is truly unforgettable. It is the largest defensive structure in the world, initially established to protect against the raids and invasions of nomadic tribes of the north. Several sections of the wall were being built in as early as the 7th century BCE, and construction continued until the 1700’s.

THE 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES SITE

Visit the sites where history has been made at the Beijing Bird’s Nest and Water Cube. The Bird’s Nest is China’s National Stadium. It has a capacity of approximately 80,000 and is currently the largest steel structure in the world. The Beijing National Aquatics Centre is affectionately referred to as the Water Cube and is the site in which 25 world records were broken by swimmers in the Water Cube during the 2008 Olympics. The intricate exterior design was inspired by bubbles created in soap lather - beautifully illuminated at night by multi-coloured lights. It boasts a capacity of 17,000 and is one of the largest tourist attractions in the nation’s capital.

THE TEMPLE OF HEAVEN

The Temple of Heaven is a sprawling complex of religious buildings located in the south-eastern section of central Beijing. The site was constructed by the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties who would host annual ceremonies of prayer for good harvest here. The Temple of Heaven has been described as “a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design” and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The building itself is a magnificent display of vibrant hues of red, blue and gold and is surrounded by beautiful and tranquil gardens.

BEIJING SILK FACTORY

In one of the most renowned silk factories in China, you will learn about the silk manufacturing processes and the significance of this fine textile in Chinese history. Silk fabric was first woven in China and it was originally considered a treasured textile reserved only for the imperial family. With time, the exclusive tradition of wearing and giving silk items as gifts by royals gradually spread outside the imperial walls and rooted itself geographically and socially in Chinese culture and trade. The renowned Silk Road and the silk trade bridged the gap between Eastern and Western cultures at that time by promoting international trade and communications.
