MAJOR AFL EVENTS TO BE HELD IN SYDNEY

The AFL Draft and a new AFL 9s National Championships will be held exclusively in Sydney in 2016 and 2017 in a major coup for NSW. NSW Premier Mike Baird said the events, secured by the NSW Government, will entice players, administrators and visitors from around Australia to the state. “These events are expected to attract more than 6,000 interstate and intrastate visitors, contributing over $4 million to the local visitor economy,” Mr Baird said.

“AFL is a rapidly growing sport, and these two events will attract the whole industry to Sydney, the home of the Swans and Giants. I look forward to welcoming these visitors, and showing them everything our beautiful city has to offer. The AFL 9s National Championships is a new event, with a shorter, non-contact version of the game; 96 teams from around Australia will come to compete in what promises to be a competitive and fun tournament,” he said.

NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the events will showcase Sydney to sports fans around Australia. “Along with the exciting new AFL 9s National Championships, it will give our State fantastic exposure all over the country,” Mr Ayres said.

“The AFL Draft is a major event on the sporting calendar, with all 18 teams looking to recruit the best young prospects in the country. Coaches, players, administrators, players and families will travel to Sydney for meetings and industry conferences, as well as the Draft itself.”

The 2016 AFL Draft will be held on Friday November 25 while the AFL 9s National Championships will be held on Friday November 25 and Saturday November 26.
