Teams from across the globe have been arriving for the world’s largest multi-sport youth games, the International Children’s Games in Lake Macquarie.
More than 1500 national and international athletes will compete in the Games, across a number of sports including athletics, BMX, football, golf, sailing and water polo. This is the first time the Games have been held in the Southern Hemisphere.
Locals and visitors can enjoy a wonderful program of entertainment at the official opening on Sunday, beginning with the Opening Ceremony at 5pm, which will feature a parade of athletes from the competing teams, the lighting of the cauldron, and live entertainment from local and national performers including well-known Australian artist Christine Anu and Mia Sifflet, who won the Games theme song competition.
Following the opening ceremony, Speers Point Park will host the Newcastle Permanent Carols by Candlelight, including performances by Christine Anu and Marty Worral with the Waratah Girls’ Choir, and a fireworks finale.
The International Children’s Games is a recognised member of the International Olympic Committee, and will take place from 6 to 11 December in Lake Macquarie. The Games are proudly supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW.
