EMBRACE THE WARMTH & ALLURE OF HOME STAYS

A breath of fresh air, the distinctive rural sounds of nature, beautiful countryside, friendly people smiling and the simplicity of life. This is the scenario that greets you daily while you live like the locals, indulging in cultural, traditional and the community activities through Malaysia’s signature Homestay programmes.

Based on the recognition conferred by the Malaysian Tourism & Culture Ministry, the state of Selangor possesses some of the best homestay programmes offering interesting and enjoyable activities throughout the year.

Distinctive in nature, each homestay offers programmes depending on the culture, food, economic activity as well as location. One of the busiest homestays in Selangor is Homestay Banghuris, just 30 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Wittingly named after three villages that made up its name, Banghuris offers visitors unique agro-tourism experiences, where visitors are shown the finer methods of rubber tapping or oil palming.

This many times over ‘Best Village’ in Malaysia also offers visitors an experience in the local cottage industries such as making tapioca fritters, noodle, beancurd and the special local delicacy, ‘tempe’ (fermented bean cake) which is featured in many of the local dishes. The highlight of the programme are local activities such as traditional games, the musical cempuling, angling and cultural shows.

If you have an affinity for seafood, make your way to Homestay Sg Sireh. Located very close to the coast, fresh sea bounties are featured in the daily feast. Paddy harvesting process programmes are available twice a year, in June and December. Kayaking, jungle tracking and cycling is also included in the programme.

For an added magical experience, visitors will also be taken to watch the fire flies colony at Kg Kuantan, depending on the weather. Before visitors retire at night, revel in traditional dances and the mesmerising ghazal and cempuling.

Homestay Kg Endah is a scenic village with paddy fields and traditional Malay architecture. Visitors will participate in the art of making the traditional ‘nasi ambeng’, a popular Javanese rice dish served with fermented bean cake, fried noodle, coconut floss, chilli chicken and salted fish and wrap in banana leaves. This dish is traditionally eaten in a big platter serving six to eight people simultaneously and is believed to foster unity and brotherhood among the diners. Recreational activities includes learning the ‘silat’ or the Malay martial art, traditional games such as ‘congkak’, ‘batu seremban’ and the Malaysian ‘hopscotch’ that will bring back childhood memories.

Homestay Bougainvillea is one hour away from Kuala Lumpur and is in the vicinity of the famous Batu Caves, the 272 steps limestone cave Hindu temple and the Ulu Yam River. The added attraction here is an indigenous community settlement not far from the homestay.

Due to its location, this homestay offers a unique programme that involves visiting Batu Caves, activities at the riverside and waterfall as well as visiting indigenous settlement. Winner of the Most Innovative Tourism Package 2014, Bougainvillaea Homestay is also listed traditional games and mocked Malay wedding in its programme.
