Sydney has secured a major United Nations forum, cementing the city’s standing as an international event destination.
Sydney has been chosen as the preferred Australian location to host the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Asia-Pacific Business Forum in November 2013.
NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell was joined for the announcement by the ESCAP Chairman, Dato Mohamed Iqbal Rawther.
“Sydney is proud to be hosting such an important regional event – it’s a huge vote of confidence in NSW,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“This is the first time the UNESCAP forum will be held in Australia since it was convened in 2004 to encourage regional development in the Asia Pacific.
“Securing this event will provide a major windfall for the NSW economy, with participants and speakers from 62 UNESCAP member states to attend the two-day event in Sydney.
“Sydney’s hotels and hospitality industries are all set to benefit when CEOs, business leaders, Government advisers, industrial experts and representatives from international aid agencies from around the world arrive here.”
The theme of this year’s forum is ‘Connecting the Pacific with Asia’, and will discuss shared economic growth and social equality.
“As a regional leader, Australia and NSW are in key positions to facilitate collaboration and bring together major regional stakeholders,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“We look forward to welcoming visitors to Sydney and around the world to share their knowledge and experience with development issues in the Asia Pacific.”
The UNESCAP Asia-Pacific Business Forum will be held from 24-26 November 2013.
