Animals Galore at the Royal Easter Show Sydney 2012

Alpacas

Make sure you visit all the animals on display at the Show, including Alpacas, Cattle, Dogs, Horses, Goats, Sheep, Pigs, Domesticated Animals, Bees, Poultry & Pigeon. I was curious what a Domesticated Animal was, but found out when I ventured into the building and discovered rats and mice, frogs and reptiles. I was pleasantly surprised by seeing Dr Harry filming a segment on the prize winning rats for his TV Show. He is the same great bloke away from the TV cameras as when he is on.

Animals are at the heart and soul of the Sydney Royal Easter Show. In competitions, events, demonstrations and displays you’ll see them at their lovable best. It’s a thrilling experience for children especially, and don’t forget you’re seeing the finest animals in the country – and that means some of the best in the world.

Pat a Pig
This year, there are some extra special animal acts to delight, entertain and enthrall. Meet 007, the friendly turkey from Oberon, licensed to thrill! He loves to show off his tail feathers. Have your photo taken with him at the Steggles Poultry Pavilion. In the same pavilion, see the pampered poultry get the princess treatment in the Chook Washing Demonstrations, and for the kids, there’s Pat a Chook.

See how to make a jumper from rabbit fur. Angora rabbits make the softest, fluffiest garments and you can watch the spinners as they shear the rabbit, spin the fur into yarn and then knit a garment, all within the time limit.

Dr Harry & TV Crew
The dog competitions and demonstration are an absolute delight. Among the highlights are the Hairless Breeds, the Police Dog Displays and the Meet the Breed program – where you can find the right dog for you. Don't forget to go to the Animal Nursery for an upclose experience with many animals.

Sunday Telegraph Animal Walk
A good way to see the various animal pavilions it go on the Sunday Telegraph Animal Walk. My suggestion is to do this in two parts, firstly the farm animals (sheep, cattle horses etc), and then the other animals (dogs, cats etc) later on in the day. The section of the walk between these two parts (around the edge of the Main Arena) is not clearly marked, and there is not much to see.

Grand Parade 2012
Grand Parade
For sheer spectacle, display and entertainment, there’s nothing like the Show’s iconic Grand Parades. Held in the Commonwealth Bank Arena, these parades feature the best of the best – the winners of the animal competitions and competitive events held throughout the Show.

There’ll be prize-winning cattle, dogs, sheep, goats and woodchoppers and the handsomest horses. Make sure you’re in the audience for this spectacular event, as the ringmaster controls the finest display of Australian agriculture. The last of the Grand Parades will be held at 4.25pm on Monday 16 April – don’t miss it!

Cattle at the Show
Cattle talk
Cattle are a big part of what the Sydney Royal Easter Show is all about. The Sydney Royal Cattle Show, held during the Sydney Royal Easter Show, is one of the most prominent and prestigious cattle shows in the country, awarding major prize money to the winners as well as a coveted mark of achievement for the top breeders. In the preparation area you can watch as cattle are prepared for competition – and cattle coiffure includes a blow-dry treatment as well as a thorough scrub. Cattle are also a major feature of the Grand Parades, one of the most impressive events of the whole Show. In the Dairy Farmers Milking Barn and the Dairy Farmers Working Dairy you can see some of the dairy cows that give us the milk and dairy products that are vital for building and maintaining strong bodies. Cattle Pavilions are open 9:30am-7:00pm

Horses at the Show
We bet you can't remember a Sydney Royal Easter Show without spotting a horse. No matter who you are, the Sydney Royal Easter Show wouldn't be the same without the spectacular variety of attractions, displays and activities that showcase some of Australia's finest horses and horsemanship.  You can see all your old favourites too. We have campdrafting, showjumping, Rodeo, Grand Parades and don't miss your opportunity to say hello to the gorgeous Clydesdales in the RM Williams Stables. Horse Pavilions are open 9:30am-7:00pm

Sheep Shearing Demonstrations
Sheep
A proud part of Australian rural culture comes to the stage when champion shearers Ian and Jim show off their skills and tell a few tales of life in the sheds.  Get a lesson from the experts, and try your own hand at the shearing game. You can also watch the Spinners & Weavers turn the fleece into beautiful garments which are on display during the show. Location: Sheep & Wool Pavillion Opening Hours: 9:30am-7:00pm Display Times: Daily at 10:30am, 12:00pm, 1:30pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm

Dogs at the Show
Yard Dog Demonstration presented by Bonnie
Renowned for their precision, agility and intelligence, Australia’s Working Yard Dogs are amazing to watch and one of the Show’s perennial crowd pleasers. Under the guidance of the boys from the Tobruk Sheep Station, the yard dogs will demonstrate their skills every day during the Show. Come and enjoy watching the dogs at work, showing off their skills from the farm.
