City of Santa Rosa celebrates its sesquicentennial (150 years)

City of Santa Rosa
Honouring the past while looking to the future, the City of Santa Rosa in central Sonoma County is thriving as it celebrates its 150th year.

Six months after the October 2017 wildfires brought national attention to Santa Rosa, the city is flourishing. Recovery efforts are underway in the specific neighbourhoods damaged by the fires, while new businesses abound citywide and the community is stronger than ever. There are plans to hold a series of lively sesquicentennial events throughout the year, culminating in September with a town celebration.

Sesquicentennial events began in March with the opening of a time capsule that was buried in the city’s Courthouse Square at its Centennial Celebration in 1968. The capsule’s contents are displayed at the History Museum of Sonoma County.

Next up is the annual Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival on May 18, under the theme Together We Rose. Then it’s the Official Sesquicentennial Celebration Sept. 8 in the recently renovated Courthouse Square. Part of the festivities will include burying a new time capsule, to be opened in 50 years.
