Victoria's golden pies

  • It’s official; Victoria home to best pie, again.

Despite every bakery around the country self-professing to serve 'the best pie in the country', the Baking Association of Australia has officially crowned regional Victoria’s Country Cob Bakery for the second consecutive year.

The Kyneton bakery was named king of the pasty at Australia’s Best Pie Competition after they beat out 344 other bakeries from around Australia with its caramelised pork and pepper pie awarded the best pie overall.

The humble meat pie is synonymous with country bakeries but these award-winning pies are road trip worthy.

Country Cob Bakery
Opened in 2016 by Cambodian migrant brothers Chan and Ryan Khun, Country Cob Bakery has established itself as the Mecca of award-winning pies in Victoria. The brothers were awarded top gong with the best pie in Australia for the second year in a row after they claimed the award with a satay seafood pie in 2018. The brothers collected 12 gold and 10 silver medals at the 2019 competition, including the best seafood pie with a Curry Scallop. 130-132 Mollison St, Kyneton, Victoria.

Whittlesea Bakehouse
Traditional pie lovers should head north to the Whittlesea Bakerhouse. Located on the doorstep of the Kinglake National Park, an hour north of Melbourne’s city centre, the bakery was awarded the best Plain Chunky Beef Pie for 2019 by the Baking Association of Australia. Sausage roll enthusiasts won’t be disappointed with the bakery awarded Gold at the Official Great Aussie Pie and Sausage Roll Competition in 2018. 34 Church St, Whittlesea, Victoria, 3757. Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes
Award winning gourmet pies can be found on the Ballarine Peninsula at Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes. The bakery, who held the title of Australia's Best Pie in 2013, won gold medals at the 2019 Australia's Best Pie & Pastie Competition for their Smokey Bourbon, Beef Rendang, Chunky Pepper Steak and Prawn Laksa pies. The accolades follow a bronze medal in the 2018 Great Aussie Pie Competition for their Croc Korma. Visitors can find their pies at Ocean Grove or Queenscliff bakeries. 40 Hesse St, Queenscliff, Victoria, 3225; 12 Park Ln, Ocean Grove, Victoria, 3226.

Edison Bakehouse
Few can refute the Steak & Pepper pie at Edison Bakehouse. Located at the foot of Mount Dandenong in Monbulk, an hour east of Melbourne, the bakery has won consecutive awards for their pie. After claiming the honour of best gourmet pie at the 2018 Great Aussie Pie Competition, the bakers at Edison Bakehouse backed it up to claim the title of Australia’s best Beef Flavoured Pie with their Steak & Pepper in 2019 by the Baking Association of Australia. 5/37-39 Main Rd, Monbulk, Victoria, 3793. Terang Country Bakery
Those looking to start their day with a pie should look no further than Terang Country Bakery, located two-and-a-half hours west of Melbourne and 35 minutes inland from the famous Great Ocean Road. Just one month after opening their doors in 2017, the bakery claimed a silver and bronze at the Great Aussie Pie Comp before backing up the result with a Gold for their Eggs Benny pie and Bronze for the Farmers pie in the breakfast category last year. 62 High St, Terang, Victoria, 3264.
