THE LAO GOVERNMENT PROPOSES THE ECC TO MANAGE CONSERVATION IN NAM POUY NATIONAL PROTECTED AREA

Photograph by Jimmy Beunardeau
There are still wild elephants in Nam Pouy NPA. With over 17 years of experience working for the conservation of Lao elephants, the ECC team was a natural choice for Lao authorities to work with.

The Sayaboury Province Governor's Office requested we formed a partnershipto protect the Province's only National Protected Area. Many of our mahouts come from this area and have an extensive knowledge of this forest, its wild elephant population and their migratory routes. Our forestry manager along with a team of three mahouts accompanied by their elephants spent one week in the forest to look at the elephant food diversity and abundance. Our team found several areas with elephant tracks, salt licks and fresh poo. They identified over50 species of plants edible to elephants.

After the week long survey was over, our team walked over 100km through the forest to establish a corridor between the ECC and the NPA.
