The Evolution of Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in the metropolis. Whether for the seasonally decorated interior, the breathtakingly beautiful illuminations, or the magnificent view over the city, tourists flock to Tokyo Tower for many reasons. Let's take a closer look at this famous landmark and its history, as well as its present state.

The construction of Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958, when the 333 meter-high broadcasting tower began transmitting TV and FM radio airwaves. It had been the highest building in Japan for 51 years until TOKYO SKYTREE(R) was built. After analog broadcasting ended in 2011, Tokyo Tower's importance as a radio tower has decreased, but its function as a distinctive symbol of Japan is as strong as ever. In addition to its observation deck, there are attractions to experience the world of the famous anime One Piece and an aquarium in the tower, making it a popular destination for families and couples!

Tokyo Tower's beautiful lights are on from sunset to midnight. Usually, the tower is dipped in a warm orange color but during certain events, Tokyo Tower might shine in rare color combinations, such as rainbow colors or bright pink. Especially around midnight, when the lights are scheduled to be turned off, you'll be able to spot many couples standing under the tower, since rumor has it that a couple who witnesses the Tokyo Tower fading into the dark night will find happiness.

Tokyo Tower has a big observation deck at around 150 meters high and another special observation deck at 250 meters high. The ascending stairs to the first deck are only open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so if you are confident in your stair climbing ability, we certainly challenge you to complete this climb! After savoring the view of Tokyo from the special observation deck, feeling like a cloud in the sky, enjoy some warm tea and relax in the big observation deck's café.
