Singapore Airlines Fly into Canberra

Travellers from around the world will be able to fly directly into Canberra from September, following the historic announcement of international flights by Singapore Airlines.

The airline will fly direct services from Singapore to Canberra from 20 September, and Canberra to Wellington in New Zealand from 21 September.

Singapore Airlines will begin the 'capital express' route with four services a week to both capital cities on a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. Tickets go on sale from Monday 25 January.

VisitCanberra Director Ian Hill said the commencement of direct international flights would have a significant impact on Canberra and the region in terms of trade, investment and tourism.

“We are delighted to welcome Singapore Airlines to Canberra and we look forward to developing closer relationships with Singapore and Wellington as a result of this partnership,” Mr Hill said.

“International flights will no doubt increase tourism to Canberra and we welcome the opportunity to further showcase our beautiful city, world-class events and festivals and our diverse capital region to visitors from all over the world.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director John O'Sullivan said securing international flights was a historic milestone for Canberra Airport.

“It's a very welcome development for the region and everybody who has been involved in making this happen deserves huge congratulations,” Mr O'Sullivan said.

“With its recently opened international terminal, Canberra is now perfectly positioned for this and further international expansion. Our own immediate focus will be on building demand across Singapore Airlines' network, with additional marketing support allocated to our partnership with the airline and VisitCanberra.”

The award-winning Canberra Airport offers a fitting gateway to the national capital, as a result of the Capital Airport Group's significant investment into infrastructure and facilities.

“VisitCanberra is proud to partner with Singapore Airlines, Capital Airport Group and Tourism Australia on this initiative,” Mr Hill said.

“We look forward to showcasing Australia's coolest little capital and its world-class products, award-winning produce and diverse mix of experiences to the world.”

Canberra's first international flight will arrive in time for Floriade, Australia's biggest celebration of spring featuring more than one million flowers, which runs from 17 September until 16 October 2016.
