BOARDRIDERS BATTLE SET FOR NORTH CRONULLA

Australia’s top surfers are putting friendships aside to compete for their local club at this weekend’s national final of the Australian Boardriders Battle, to be contested at North Cronulla beach.

A strong line-up of Australia’s best boardriding clubs will feature, with defending champions Snapper Rocks Surfriders boasting World Surf League stars Stephanie Gilmore and Joel Parkinson. They will be challenged by clubs such as North Narrabeen Boardriders, Kirra Surfriders, Merewether Surfboard Club, Le-Ba Boardriders and Avoca Boardriders.

Each club team will include one junior (under 18) surfer, four open age surfers, and one surfer aged over 35. Each team must include one female surfer. An exciting event format will see teams battle it out in a women’s division, five-person teams’ division and a skins competition.

Supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, the event is shaping up to be a highlight on the summer calendar, which also includes the Australian Open of Surfing at Manly and Surfest at Newcastle.

Member for Cronulla Mark Speakman said, “The Final of the Boardriders Battle will be a great spectacle, and North Cronulla Beach is set to fill with competitors, locals and visitors alike. The carnival atmosphere will be fantastic and I can’t wait to get down and watch the event.”

“The NSW Government is proud to support this event, and I encourage all competitors and spectators to take some time to explore Cronulla while they are here. From the spectacular beaches to the lively cafes and restaurants, the area certainly has plenty to offer,” he said.
