Wilson, Is That You? New Glamping Resort On the Great Barrier Reef
Wilson Island, one of nature's tiniest arks will reopen on November 6, 2019, as Queensland's newest low-tech glamping offering.
At just 5.4 hectares in size – as big as five football fields – the island is a micro bump on the most magnificent reef in the world and is located a 40-minute slow boat ride from Heron Island Resort on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. The island will cradle nine glamping tents plus a central long-house serving fresh Australian cuisine and an honesty bar.
The island is so remote; every visit comes with a digital detox. There are no emails. No Facebook. No phone. Just you, an old-fashioned novel, good conversations, fresh food, rest, nature and sunshine. And enough power to charge the camera and chill the wine.
The island's surrounding waters are home to healthy coral reefs, rainbow-coloured fish and a host of IMAX sized marine creatures. Above the tideline, Wilson is a seasonal resting place for birds including the goofy-footed shearwater that burrows its nest 60 cm into the sand.
Prices start from $950 per couple per night, and the entire island can be booked exclusively for $8100 per night, minimum three nights.

Willow Vale Cooking School will open its doors this month. Set on eight acres in the Gold Coast Hinterland, with a beautiful 130-year-old heritage Queenslander surrounded by luscious green hills, the school is owned and run by Bruno and Catherine Loubet, who returned to Australia from the UK at the end of 2017 to pursue their dream of launching a bespoke cooking school.
A veteran in the restaurant industry, Bruno spent more than 40 years heading up kitchens in London, France and Australia working with world-renowned chefs, along the way gaining Michelin stars and publishing three cookbooks. The Willow Vale Cooking School workshops are planned around the garden calendar and tailored to seasonal vegetables. Bruno will cook in front of guests while offering tips and tricks of the trade.

UMI Arts, the peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural organisation in Cairns has launched Ngar Bayal Wed, a weekly song and dance presentation that brings to life the cultural heritage and stories of the Aboriginal Buri Guman Dance Group from Yarrabah along with the Ailan style Torres Strait Islander Maluilgal and Gerib Sik Dance Groups. Ngar Bayal Wed, which translates to feet, dance and song in Torres Strait and Yidinji languages, showcases the wailing sounds of Ailan drums and rhythmic creole voices of Queensland's First Peoples.
